A curved-top monolith
carrum velarium
Description
A rectilinear, front-loading waste receptacle. Specimens come in different finishes based on location, generally featuring a monolithic powder-coated steel body with gently curved edges and a convex lid that forms the receptacle cover.
Identification
- Tall, rectangular form with smooth, rounded vertical edges
- Sloped top with a pronounced overhang
- Side-hinged, front-opening service panel
- Surface-mounted triangular security lock
- Optional pictograms: waste basket or recycling triangle
- Commonly deployed in matched pairs (trash + recycling)
Habitat
Often installed in new mixed-use developments, campus landscapes, or contemporary parks, particularly those with a minimalist design language or private maintenance regimes. Units observed near ground-floor mechanicals or placed alongside integrated seating.
Range
Presently observed in select U.S. installations, particularly in privately managed public spaces and campuses. Designed and manufactured in the Czech Republic.
Discussion
The Prax Waste Receptacle is manufactured by Czech firm mmcité. The handle-free design reinforces a clean silhouette, while a recessed triangular security screw locks the service panel on the user-facing side. Disposal openings are generous but shielded from above, reducing rain ingress and discouraging misuse. Decals for waste or recycling are applied directly to the steel face, with variations in aperture type and internal liner for different waste streams.
Initial specimens were observed in Allentown, PA in recently renovated pocket parks.
Climate impacts
The receptacle’s all-metal construction lends itself to durability and long service life, with reduced need for replacement. However, steel manufacturing remains carbon-intensive. Powder coating offers rust resistance but adds to embodied energy. Triangular security hardware can reduce unauthorized opening, indirectly improving collection efficiency.
