Discussion

Brooklyn Bridge Park purchased these receptacles and installed them in October 2023 to divert waste from landfills by encouraging visitors to separate trash, recyclables, and paper. Unlike traditional open-top litter baskets, these bins conceal waste, reducing windblown litter and pest access. The galvanized steel construction enhances durability, though long-term success depends on visitor compliance with waste sorting and proper maintenance.

Climate impacts

Increasing the rate of recycling, through waste stream segregation, helps reduce landfill usage, and allows new feedstocks to be used for recycled goods. Recycling isn’t the silver bullet, as additional energy and carbon are created during the recycling process. Reducing and reusing in addition to recycling continue to be key ways to reduce consumer impact in the environment. These bins, if they are adequately maintained, can help increase the rates of recycling in these high traffic areas.

Galvanization contains some very caustic chemicals, which if they aren’t contained and disposed of safely can lead to groundwater contamination. We will assume that this was followed in this manufacturing process.
