Description
The High End Basket is a durable, enclosed litter receptacle used in select areas of New York City. Unlike standard wire baskets, this model features a rigid metal frame with vertical ribs, a domed lid, and a hinged access panel for sanitation workers. The enclosed structure provides greater containment of waste, helping to reduce windblown litter and exposure to the elements.
These bins appear in commercial districts and high-foot-traffic areas, where a more robust alternative to open wire baskets is preferred. The domed lid helps minimize rainwater accumulation, and the reinforced metal structure adds durability.
Identification
- Shape: Cylindrical with vertical ribbing and a domed lid.
- Material: Metal construction, typically painted dark green.
- Lid: Domed with a circular opening for depositing waste.
- Access: Hinged side panel for waste removal.
- Markings: Often features DSNY branding and the slogan “Keep Your Community Clean.”
Habitat
Typically found in high-traffic urban areas, including commercial corridors, intersections, and certain parks. These receptacles are often positioned where standard litter baskets have struggled with capacity or maintenance challenges.
Range
The High End Basket appears in throughout New York City.
Discussion
The High End Basket was introduced as a more durable alternative to wire baskets. Its reinforced sheetmetal construction makes it less prone to tipping or damage, but the fixed opening and enclosed design may impact capacity if not emptied frequently. While it provides better containment than wire baskets, its fixed opening and enclosed design can also limit capacity if trash accumulates too quickly.
These bins are often deployed in BID-managed zones, where additional maintenance support ensures they are emptied regularly. However, like all public waste receptacles, their effectiveness depends on placement, collection frequency, and user behavior.
Climate impacts
The High End Basket represents an effort to improve waste containment and urban aesthetics, though its effectiveness depends on maintenance schedules and user behavior. The enclosed design provides containment, at a cost of additional material and weight, though it does not include compacting mechanisms, meaning waste buildup could still be an issue in high-use areas.
