Description
The Central Park Conservancy Recycling System is a set of standardized waste and recycling receptacles used in Central Park. The system consists of three bin variations, each with the same form factor but color-coded and labeled to distinguish between general waste, cans & bottles, and paper.

Habitat
Primarily found within Central Park, these receptacles are strategically placed along pathways, near benches, and at park entrances to encourage proper waste disposal and recycling.

Originally found in Central Park, but some have been found outside the park, most notably at the Cooper-Hewitt.
Discussion
The design of the bins references elements of 1930s Central Park benches, aiming to blend with the park’s visual identity. The spiral flow lid and diagonal slats are intended to guide waste disposal, though user compliance varies. While these are aesthetically pleasing, we’ve been told by maintenance workers that durability and cross-contamination hasn’t been solved by these bins (a problem which isn’t just found with these bins).
While the system encourages recycling in theory, cross-contamination of waste streams is a persistent issue, as is the case with many public recycling efforts. The bins are durable and less prone to tipping than lighter models, but maintenance remains a factor—aluminum construction reduces long-term wear, though graffiti and improper use require ongoing attention.
Climate impacts
As a recognizable part of Central Park’s waste management infrastructure, the hortus carrum has been integrated into public spaces with mixed results—effective in theory, but reliant on the public’s willingness to use it correctly.
