Description
The Link5G tower is a communication structure introduced in New York City to support expanded digital connectivity and 5G network deployment. Standing approximately 32 feet tall, the tower is designed to house multiple telecommunications providers, with the stated goal of improving high-speed internet access in public spaces.
Identification

Habitat
Deployed along sidewalks in New York City, the placement strategy prioritizes high-foot-traffic areas and locations where improved broadband access is needed. Some installations have replaced older LinkNYC kiosks, while others have been placed in new locations.
Range
As of 2024, approximately 160 Link5G towers have been installed citywide, with additional units planned. The expansion has included installations in all five boroughs, but rollout timelines have been influenced by permitting, adoption by telecom providers, and public response.

Launched in 2021, Link5G is intended to increase access to public Wi-Fi and support 5G network infrastructure. The towers are designed to accommodate multiple carriers, reducing the need for each provider to install separate 5G nodes.
Each tower includes:
- Free public Wi-Fi, accessible within a 750-foot radius.
- Space for multiple telecommunication providers to install 5G equipment.
- USB charging ports for mobile devices.
- Digital displays for advertisements and public service announcements.
The structure is cylindrical, with a mesh-covered upper section that encloses the 5G equipment.
The project has drawn mixed responses. Supporters cite the potential benefits of improved broadband access and reduced digital dead zones, while concerns have been raised about the placement, design, and visual impact of the towers in different neighborhoods. Additionally, adoption by telecommunications companies has varied, affecting the pace of deployment.
Climate impacts
The impacts of the Link5G are hard to disentangle: co-locating a bunch of radio and telecommunications equipment in one place allows the city and providers to reduce the amount of installations across the city, reducing the amount of material spend and the visional penalties associated with multiple aerials. At the same time, the tower itself is quite large, and it’s not clear why we can’t place some of these units inside light-mounted installations – which happens in NYC already, and across the US.
So for now, the impacts are neutral to negative, since it’s not clear if the Link5G is being fully utilized.
