Description
Fire hydrants provide emergency water access for firefighting operations, ensuring that responders can quickly connect hoses to a pressurized water source. In New York City, hydrants are typically dry-barrel models, designed to prevent freezing by keeping water below ground until needed. The hydrants are standardized to support rapid deployment, with a 4.5-inch pumper nozzle for high-flow connections and two 2.5-inch hose nozzles for standard firefighting hoses.
Identification
- Shape: Cylindrical body with a domed top and protruding nozzles.
- Material: Cast iron construction for durability.
- Color: The dome or bonnet is painted bright aluminum. The standpipe and barrel come in two versions:
- Black if connected to a water main less than 24 inches in diameter
- Safety red if connected to a 24-inch or larger main.
- Markings: The size of the water main is stenciled on the hydrant’s roadway-facing side in white numerals, ranging from 4 to 6 inches in height.
Habitat
Fire hydrants are located along sidewalks and at street intersections, placed strategically to ensure that no building is more than 250 feet away from a water source. Regulations require a three-foot clearance around hydrants to allow access in emergencies.
Range
New York City has over 100,000 fire hydrants distributed across all five boroughs. Their locations are determined by municipal fire codes and updated as urban development requires new coverage.
Discussion
Fire hydrants are a critical element of urban infrastructure, evolving over time to meet the needs of modern firefighting. Their color-coding system helps firefighters quickly assess water main capacity, while standardized nozzle fittings ensure compatibility with FDNY equipment.
Hydrants are sometimes used for non-emergency water access, such as street cleaning and temporary cooling in summer. Unauthorized hydrant use can lead to water pressure loss, affecting firefighting efforts, which is why NYC requires permits for non-emergency hydrant access.
In 2018 & 2022 designers Tei Carpenter and Chris Woebken worked with with the Youth Design Center in Brownsville, Brooklyn to design a new set of hydrant attachments, which culminated in the New Public Hydrant, 2018 / 2022 project. A series of prototypes were made and were exhibited in MoMA.



Climate impacts
Having a network of interconnected, pressurized water waiting to extinguish fires was a monumental undertaking. And the continual upkeep of the system takes a sustained amount of infrastructure work.
